Historical Note
In the late 1970s, a controversy over infant formula "aggressive" promotion and sales in the Third World, especially by Swiss company Nestlé, resulted in boycotts against Nestlé both in the United States and Europe. In 1981, the 34th World Health Assembly adopted an International Code regulating the marketing of breast milk substitutes. The vote to ratify the new code was held in May 1981 and the United States was the only nation to vote against the code. The marketing code was adopted and in 1984 the boycott was suspended when Nestlé agreed to follow the code.
